The
Boulle Marquetry Style
The tabletops below are inspired from original designs from André-Charles
Boulle. Boulle ( 1642-1732 ) was the appointed cabinet-maker for King
Louis the XIV. He developed his style and technics around 1670, taking
inspiration mostly from Italian designers. His sons, Philippe-Jean, and
Charles-Joseph, carried on the workshop's prestigious name, until Charles-Joseph
died, in 1754. Furniture were made in a typical marquetry style, using
several material like turtoise-shell, horn, metal, or different types
of wood. It is said nowadays that a "Boulle furniture" means in a Boulle
style, and "attributed to André-Charles Boulle" might really come from
the workshop of the King's cabinet-maker. Each of the following models
needs an average of a hundred hours of work. .
